My 2017 Word of the Year


I love the idea of choosing a word for each year! It’s something to meditate on and to develop goals around. This year, my word is Mindful.

Lately, I’ve been feeling time pass too quickly. With a busy work life, a never-ending list of sewing projects and chores, fun occasions with friends and family, and traveling, the years go by so quickly and I want to make sure I’m taking them in and appreciating them!

I can be mindful in a lot of ways:

  • Mindful of my and other’s feelings
  • Mindful of my actions and words
  • Mindful of my health and what I put in my body
  • Mindful of life’s little pleasures and joys
  • Mindful of where and what I spent my energy on

I’m sure as 2017 goes, I’ll discover even more ways mindfulness plays a role in my life.

To set myself up for a year of mindfulness, I bought a few tools to help (pictured above). I may not end up being diligent in my use of these all year, but I hope to discover the ones that work best for my goals and lifestyle.

As I opened my Happier calendar this morning, I was surprised to find that my daily happiness challenge was to pick a word of the year! Check that one off! (Also, Gretchen Rubin’s “Happier”podcast is one of my favorites, so check it out if you’re a podcast listener!)

I started the One Line a Day journal last year, but stopped after 8 months. I started traveling so much at the end of the year, that I just lost the flow of writing in it each day. I’m definitely looking forward to starting this up again.

I’ve always enjoyed writing! The Mindfulness Journal has daily prompts and quotes to meditate on through writing. I’m interested to explore my feelings through this medium.

Coloring is so good for your health! (Want proof? Read this blog from Make It Yourself!) The Count Your Blessing book has weekly quotes and coloring pages to meditate on.

These fill-in cards are a great way to tell someone in your life what you enjoy about them! Each card has a different prompt. I admit, I did one a few weeks ago for my husband and it was nice to think about the reasons I appreciate him — and it made him happy to read it!
