January UFO Challenge Quilt

Are you doing the American Patchwork & Quilting UFO Challenge? (If not, you should! Details are here.) The UFO I worked on this month was my Smorgasblocks quilt.

I started it this summer as part of a free quilt along that Eye Candy Quilts hosted on her blog. I finished the quilt center this summer and then didn’t touch it until January.

I added borders, then quilted and bound it to finish. I love how it turned out! I’m not an expert at machine quilting at all (which was the reason this quilt was a UFO), but I downloaded a lot of podcasts to listen to and really took my time on this quilt!

Since this quilt had so many different blocks (from pieced to appliqué), I really wanted to do custom quilting to bring out each block in a special way.

This quilt was made entirely from my stash and I even had enough fabric to do a pieces back. I love the scrappy look, but with a controlled color palette. The purple, teal, and coral feels very fresh and fun!

I’m calling this quilt Harvey’s quilt (he’s my cat!). He was a big help keeping me company while I sewed and quilted this. And he was especially helpful while I was laying out fabrics and blocks to find the best design. Plus, he loves the cat in the quilt!

This year, I also promised myself I was going to start labeling my quilts. So I used a leftover block piece for my label in the bottom corner of the quilt.

Hope you can join the UFO Challenge with me! I can’t always promise I’ll finish a UFO quilt by the end of the month, but I sure feel motivated!

Thanks for joining my for “happy hour,”

Lindsay
