Block Party Quilt Along Update

I’m two weeks into the American Patchwork & Quilting quilt along and wanted to share my progress! The last few weeks I’ve had the stomach flu and a cold, so I haven’t gotten very much sewing done, but I’m on the mend and tackled a bit today!

The String Theory quilt by Sharon Tucker calls for 1,500 tiny strips. You use them to do string piecing to make pieced strips for the quilt. (See the quilt below.)

I cut a stack of Christmas-theme fat quarters to get that many strips. I’m going on a quilt retreat next weekend and am glad I took the time to cut all the strips, so I can concentrate on piecing.

I couldn’t wait to get a little piecing done, though! A quilt like this is perfect for chain-piecing. I put a handful of strips in a pile and sewed them together randomly. I love the fabrics together, so I wasn’t too picky with what fabrics went together.

I’m storing all my strips in a tin so I can transport them easily. Even my pieced block centers fit in the tin, so I can keep all the parts of the project together.

I hope to make lots of progress on this quilt next weekend! I’m sure I’ll be posting pics from the retreat on Instagram, so follow me there!

Thanks for joining me for “happy hour,”
