My Aurifil BOM 2017 Finish

Last January, I started Aurifil’s seventh annual Block-of-the-Month quilt, featuring blocks made by some of their designers! The year’s theme was rainbow, and since I’d never made a rainbow quilt, I was excited to try!

I used the Bread N Butter collection by American Jane for Moda Fabrics. I love the bright colors and happy florals! (See more about my individual blocks here.) I sewed and quilted with Aurifil 50 weight thread in a variety of colors.

I pieced the blocks together with white-and-black polka dot sashing. I used my scraps of fabric for the sashing squares and a scrappy binding. I love the effect the rainbow binding has on the quilt!

I even pieced the backing with leftover fabrics mixed with black-and-white prints to really help the colors pop!

I sewed straight lines down the quilt approximately 3/8″ apart using Aurifil 50-wt in a light gray (color 2600). The light gray easily blended with all the fabrics.

As a nice surprise, January’s weather gave me a weekend of 50-degree temperatures, so I used that excuse to get outside and take pictures of this in the sun!

This quilt was also the first number picked for the American Patchwork & QuiltingUFO Challenge. It’s not too late to join if you need motivation to finish some projects!

Thanks for joining me for “happy hour,”

Lindsay

  1. What a beautiful quilt I .ike how the colors pay well with each otjer and are accentuated by the quilting. I hadn’t thought of using a neutral gray for quilting and it blends wel. Thank you the inspiration.
