This Is Thirty: A Birthday Project

Earlier this week I turned 30 years old. I’m so excited to enter this new decade! My 20s was a busy time (graduated college, moved to a new state, got a full-time job, got married, and bought a house). I’m ready for my 30s to be a time of settling in and leaning in to the things I love!

Did you follow along with my Hexagon Birthday Project? (You can catch up here.) Each day during my 29th year, I paper pieced a hexagon to describe my day. Then I put them all together in a quilt that reads like a calendar in a year in my life.

It was a completely special project! I had never English paper pieced, so I learned a whole new skills and really pushed myself to see my life and my fabric stash in a new and exciting way.

I wanted my 30th year to be just as special! So, I’m starting another birthday project! This year, I’ll be making one improv block a week for fifty weeks of this year. I pulled a color palette of black, white, gray, and saturated gem tones.

Here’s my first block! I just allowed myself to cut, sew, and trim in a random order until I got a look I liked! This block is 3.5″. I’m not sure if I’ll make all blocks the same size or not. I’m just going to let myself explore and experiment and see where it takes me!

As a rule-follower, I’m hoping this year of improv blocks opens me up to new experiences and encourages me to take chances!

Thanks for joining me for “happy hour”,

I’ll be posting my blocks weekly on Instagram @lindsmayland and using the hashtag #lindsayimprov30. Hope you join me there to see more!
