Color Outside the Lines: A Quilt Along Finish

A little more than two months after starting the Quilts & More 2019 Quilt Along, I’m finished! The quilt is called Color Outside the Lines by designers Linda and Carl Sullivan from Colourwerx, and the pattern appeared in the Summer 2019 issue of Quilts & More. (You can also buy the pattern online here.)

I only used fabrics from my stash for this quilt. The colors are very much inspired by nature — blues, greens, and browns. My mother is a very talented gardener, and this quilt is for her, so we made sure to match the fabrics to her decor. When I visited her earlier this year, I brought a huge bag full of fabric with me, so we could look at patterns and colors together and match her furniture and wall colors perfectly.

I’ve never used templates for a quilt before, so making templates and using them to cut the triangle pieces was a learning experience. But it gets such great results for those points.

I changed the pattern — I hardly ever follow the pattern exactly. Instead of the hourglass units in the corners of each block, I did triangle-squares. It changes the overall effect. Instead of another Pinwheel design where the blocks meet, this has a Square-in-a-Square effect.

I backed the quilt with dark blue and a strip of green prints, and used the same blue for the binding. (Just a reminder to prewash blue backing — unfortunately, I didn’t, and even though I used a ColorCatcher, the blue bled into the cream background. This is the first time I’ve ever had a quilt bleed into my other fabrics, so it was a hard lesson to learn. Sorry, Mom!)

I quilted the quilt with a cream thread and did straight lines every 1/2″ across the quilt. This is one of my favorite ways to quilt a quilt — it’s so simple, but looks very modern at the same time.

Thanks for joining me for “happy hour”,
