Sometimes inspiration just strikes! Five months ago, I saw a quilt pattern I loved and a fabric line I was obsessed with and combined them to make the cutest pair of pillows. After seeing Annette Plog’s Make a Trade quilt, I knew I needed to make one of my own! Annette is one of my favorite people in the quilting industry — she’s so creative and kind. Her quilts are always deliciously scrappy. You can see Annette’s quilt below and find the pattern in the December 2019 issue of American Patchwork & Quilting, on sale October 4.
I volunteered to make the color option for this quilt! If you didn’t know, every quilt published in American Patchwork & Quilting has a color option to show you how to use the pattern in a totally different color palette! I really wanted to show how a classic Jacob’s Ladder block can create a MUCH different look if you carefully place colors.
My version is called Playful Pillow Pair and is a free pattern online! I used the Good Vibes Only collection by Shayla Wolf for Windham Fabrics. The collection has 32 SKUS, but because this pattern’s pieces are so tiny, I chose mostly fabrics that had smaller prints so you would be able to see them once I cut them up.
I’m obsessed with these fabrics! They’re so bright and fun. I knew careful color placement was the key to changing the look at the original quilt. I used the black to do a lot of the hard work for me. In one pillow, black prints form a standout center star surrounded by pops of color. In the other pillow, black prints form an Irish Chain design with a rainbow crossing through the center.
I had a lot of fun adding little touches to this pillow. I did a lot of fussy-cutting (the center of the star was pieced from four squares of fabric, which was the most challenging). I also used the fabric’s selvages to form the pillows’ envelope back. Because selvages don’t fray, this allowed me to avoid hemming the edges of the envelope backs.
Don’t forget to pick up the December issue of American Patchwork & Quilting! I’m so proud to be a part of it! And grab my free quilt pattern for these pillows on the AllPeopleQuilt.com website here.
BONUS: A year ago, I made a free quilt pattern using Shayla Wolf’s previous fabric line. Don’t the quilt and the pillows look great together? Grab the free quilt pattern here.
Thanks for joining me for “happy hour,”
